The Crown Inn
Walkers Lane, Shorwell PO30 3JZ - 01983 740293
Featured in the AA’s Britain’s Best Pubs 2011 and 2012, this pub is set in a pretty village in picturesque West Wight. In summer, arum lilies decorate the garden stream, and a Wendy House, slide and swings keep youngsters amused. Some of the building dates back to the 17th century, and there are log fires, antique furniture and apparently even a friendly ghost. Listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2012, the pub is also Cask Marque-accredited in recognition of the quality of its six real ale beers, which include one that is brewed on the Island. All the food is home-made, with a wide choice to suit all tastes, including vegetarians. Many of the most popular dishes use locally sourced lamb and beef, game in winter and fish in summer. The award-winning specials board usually features 10 dishes, which may include sea bass, salmon and roasted duck breast.
