The 1940s street scene, with replica shop fronts, an Air Raid Precautions office, mechanics workshop, general stores and Sunday school room, gives an insight into civilian life during the Second World War. Other interesting items from the war include an American half-track and a huge Mighty Scammell recovery truck — and don’t miss the cold war Russian missile. There are machine guns on display from the First World War, as well as the remains of a Howitzer gun trail, which was destroyed in Iraq after being manned by a group of young men from Freshwater. Subject to weather and additional payment, you can take a ride in one of the museum’s vehicles over a cross-country track and also test your skills on the air-rifle range. Enjoy a coffee or snack in the museum café, Churchills, which is filled with memorabilia about the war-time prime minister, and make sure you pay a visit to the fully stocked gift shop. When visiting the Abbey, enjoy the grounds and pilgrim chapel along with the monastery shop and art gallery, where local artists display their work. Visitors will enjoy the tranquillity of the popular tea shop café that offers freshly made food using local produce. The farm shop offers a variety of local island products, along with Quarr Abbey’s own unique range of products, which include delicious jams and chutneys, honey, and ale — all made with Quarr Abbey’s own allotment-grown produce, which is also available to buy. Visitors can even buy pig food to feed the popular resident pigs. There is a visitor and exhibition centre where visitors can learn about the history and life of Quarr Abbey, then enjoy the beautiful landscaped grounds, including an orchard area and hen rescue project. The woodland walk is ideal for families and children’s Quarr explorer kits are available to use. The Abbey has recently improved visitor access and car parking facilities.
