Immerse yourself in history at this family friendly museum in Northwood. Our exhibits range from the 1850s to the 2000s. Come and see our newly renovated small arms room, as well as enjoy lots of interactive opportunities, such as having your photograph taken with one of the small arms, or in the back of an armoured car. The 1940s street scene, with replica shop fronts, an Air Raid Precautions office, mechanics workshop, general stores and Sunday school room, gives an insight into civilian life during the Second World War. Other interesting items from the war include an American half-track and a huge Mighty Scammell recovery truck — and don’t miss the cold war Russian missile. There are machine guns on display from the First World War, as well as the remains of a Howitzer gun trail, which was destroyed in Iraq after being manned by a group of young men from Freshwater. Subject to weather and additional payment, you can take a ride in one of the museum’s vehicles over a cross-country track and also test your skills on the air-rifle range. Enjoy a coffee or snack in the museum café, Churchills, which is filled with memorabilia about the war-time prime minister, and make sure you pay a visit to the fully stocked gift shop. Shanklin Chine celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2017 and is the Island’s oldest tourist attraction — the stunning tree-lined gorge has been a magnet for millions of visitors since opening in 1817. In 2018, it became a Registered Charity (1173736) to preserve it for future generations. Wander amid the natural tranquillity until dusk, and then enjoy the hundreds of lights illuminating the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls during the summer. Illuminations take place from May through to November and events, including “Music in the Chine” take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening in July and August. There are also regular art and photographic exhibitions, tea gardens, gift shop, nature and heritage displays and a Second World War exhibition. Quarr Abbey is a working Benedictine Monastery and home to a community of monks who dedicate their life to prayer, contemplation and community life. Set in beautiful and peaceful surroundings, the monastery has free entry and can be found just outside of Ryde, close to the ferry port. When visiting the Abbey, enjoy the grounds and pilgrim chapel along with the monastery shop and art gallery, where local artists display their work. Visitors will enjoy the tranquillity of the popular tea shop café that offers freshly made food using local produce. The farm shop offers a variety of local island products, along with Quarr Abbey’s own unique range of products, which include delicious jams and chutneys, honey, and ale — all made with Quarr Abbey’s own allotment-grown produce, which is also available to buy. Visitors can even buy pig food to feed the popular resident pigs. There is a visitor and exhibition centre where visitors can learn about the history and life of Quarr Abbey, then enjoy the beautiful landscaped grounds, including an orchard area and hen rescue project. The woodland walk is ideal for families and children’s Quarr explorer kits are available to use. The Abbey has recently improved visitor access and car parking facilities. RNLB Alfred Albert Williams (Tamar class 16-17), the largest lifeboat that can be housed in a boathouse and slipway-launched, can be inspected from a public viewing gallery. The station’s inshore lifeboat, an inflatable RIB type with a crew of three, is housed in a purpose-built boathouse completed in 2013. A lift provides disabled access to the gallery level from the pier, which is wheelchair accessible. Display panels and a video slide show give a graphic account of the history of the lifeboat at Bembridge, along with the history of the RNLI lifeboat service since its origins in the 1820s. The RNLI souvenir shop stocks a selection of gifts. Daily, 11am-4pm (2pm-4pm during off-season).
